The state of Minnesota will be mandating all students to have completed algebra by 8th grade. This will be enforced within the next two years. There is lots of controversy revolving around this issue, some say that most students are not prepared for the advanced classes they are taking and forcing them to complete algebra even sooner could make the situation worse. A study showed that over 120,000 eighth-graders are "woefully unprepared" for their advanced math classes.
I found this article to be especially interesting because students in Edina Public Schools already complete the course by the end of 8th grade. The students at Edina Schools on the advanced math path complete it in 7th grade. It is nice that Edina will not have to worry about this issue as many other schools will.
